Day 66
Friday
7 September
Onslow
The scratching of a branch across the top of the van, had us waking at different points during the night and I was still feeling the effects of the interrupted sleep, when I finally woke. I ready my book, completing the final few pages, before hopping out and having breakfast.
After having a shower, we gathered our things and made the trek into town. It was a good walk. We stopped in at the Info Centre and collected some bits, turns out the rodeo is in town today and tomorrow, so we may just get out to it.
Attached to the centre is the museum and for a $3 donation, you could wander through and check out the old things they have on display. We took our time, perusing the various cabinets of; household bric-a-brac, tradies tools and health care items, before entering the rocks and shells section. Outside, was an old train and a personal submarine, built in Onslow.
After completing the tour, we continued our walk, wandering down to the foreshore, where we watched the water receding. We skirted around the caravan park and up to the ANZAC memorial, where the central circle is designed to have the morning sun in perfect position on 25 April.
We then followed the 1km, Ian Blair Commemorative Boardwalk through the sand dunes. We looked out to sea and across to the salt jetty, before making our way back. We wandered back through the town and on to the Beadle Bay Hotel, stopping in for a hot choc. We made ourselves at home and at midday, we ordered lunch to share, salt n pepper squid. It was delicious.
With a meal to digest, we happily made the walk back to the van, just as it was starting to heat up. Once back, I was quick to return to the electronics, keen to keep updating everything and loading on all of the photos. With such a quick connection, it was all done in no time at all.
Paul was happy to take a nap in the air conditioning, while I surfed the net and socials. Time drifted away and before we knew it, it was 4.30pm and with Paul now feeling refreshed, we took a drive to back beach road, parking in the small, beachside carpark and then heading for the water.
We wandered along the beach, crossing under the salt jetty. There wasn’t much happening on it. We then continued our meander, checking the giant gas hub, that stood like the magical OZ off in the distance.
On old boy came driving by, his border collie happily chasing the car along the sand. We stopped for a chat and he handed over numerous shells he had just collected from further up the beach. He even gave us a bag to keep the stash in.
We continued to walk on, but eventually made the decision to make our way back along our tracks, the sun readying to say goodnight for another day. We took in the view, before returning to the car and driving into town, stopping at the Onslow Beach Club to enjoy a drink, as the sky put on its pink nightwear.
After finishing up, we returned to the van to make dinner and to watch the wildcats preseason game against Adelaide. Thankfully it was being Facebook live streamed, though the feed was dodgy through the first half. I was also keeping an eye on the Melbourne v Geelong final.
In the end, the wildcats won by 39 points, a great showing and Geelong were bundled out of the finals. We were both happy to call it a night when it was all over.
