Letterkenny to Westport

Saturday 19 May 2012  - Letterkenny to Westport
Day 37 and 122 to go
Another morning arrives way too quick. The alarm is starting to annoy me. We were out for breakfast at 8.30am being joined by a retired French couple. Breakfast was filling, but not as elaborate as our previous B&B.
We were on our way soon after heading out to the coast of Dungloe. We had to drive over mountains that had lakes and peat bogs at the top. The landscape was forever changing. It was quite wild and woolly.
From Dungloe we continued our drive along the coastal road before heading south to Donegal. We stopped in at the tourist office before walking through the main streets. There was a street market on that we wandered through, buying some savoury slices to eat. We then continued on to Donegal Castle.

We were able to walk around the castle grounds and then inside. This castle still had a roof on the tower and period furniture and tapestries were in place. It was interesting. The castle was built in 1474.
We then had a drink at the castle bar before heading back towards the car. At the end of the car park were the ruins of the old abbey that is also a graveyard so we had a wander around before heading on again.
We drove through Sligoe, best known for the burial of the poet Yeats. Our final destination was Westport. We found the tourist office and collected maps and found out about the B&B’s before getting into the car and driving out toward the Quay finding a B&B on the way to stop at.
We made ourselves at home before driving to the quay and having a walk along the waterfront. I took another dive over a chain fence, hitting the dirt again and leaving me in fits of laughter and Paul wishing he had the camera.

The views over the water and out to Patrick Mountain were beautiful. The weather was perfect with no wind and a little more warmth than we have been used to over the past few days.
We returned to the car and drove back into the town. We did a lap of the streets before stopping at O’Malleys for a drink and dinner. It was a great night watching the Heineken Rugby Cup Final in which Leinster defeated Ulster.
We returned to our B&B at 8.30pm. Paul watched the Chelsea v Bayern Munich European Final while I sorted photos. The matched ended in penalties with Chelsea the eventual winner.
