Day 9 - Thursday 12 July - Last day in Carnarvon

Day 9

Carnarvon

Another 7.15am fishing tip, this time to Massey Bay. Paul set up his things on the bank while I used the time to catch up on the blog. Every now and then I would see action in the wing mirror and take a look to see what was biting, only a tiny bream was brought in. An hour later, we moved on to the very end of the point where some other fishers were. The move didn’t prove any more successful and we packed it in and came home for breakfast and a shower.  I rang home to find out that Yogi had met the new sheep and after getting under the fence was squarely head butted. Serves him right. Paul rang Jaden to see how things were going and to check on his Kalgoorlie trip.

I packed up lunch and then we were back in the car and heading for Rocky Pool, a permanent water hole on the Gascoyne River, 50km east of Carnarvon on the Gascoyne Junction Road. The road out again demonstrated just how much rain has been through the area, with many large water holes lining the edges.

We turned on to the Rocky Pool Road, a dirt one and then began the dancing routine, dodging the large pools of water, corrugations and muddy roads for 4km, before finally finding a space to park up. What a beautiful spot. There was plenty of water, red rock and shady trees.

We explored the banks, looking out from the cliff above for fish. I dropped down one cliff face to get closer to the water, before returning to Paul to continue out walk. Everything is on vivid here, the orange lunar landscape rocks, the ghostly white trees trunks, the vivid blues of the sky and the emerald green of the water.

We returned to a spot where there was a beach and I waded out into the cool water to move a log so it could continue its journey. As there were flat rocks nearby, I decided to perch myself, surrounded by the water and just soak it all in. Paul returned to the car for his fishing gear and we set ourselves up for the next hour enjoying serenity.

We had lunch, before finally making our way back to town. We dropped in at the Woolies for a few supplies and fuel, before coming back to the van. We unloaded and then walked down to Morels, to check their fruit and vege supply. I at my sepote ice block on the way. To me, it had more of a banana taste and a thick custard like texture. It wasn’t unpleasant, but I wouldn’t rush back for it.

There was no vege that we required, so we indulged in another frozen fruit dessert, choc coated strawberries and a custard apple icy pole. These sustained us for the walk back in the warming sun.

When we returned, we played cards for a while, I finally had a win! I worked on the day’s photos, before the brain was saying get up off the lazy bum. We drove back into town and parked along the front so that we could check out the walk of remembrance for the HMAS Sydney sailors. An individual plaque for all 600+ sailors lines the river. The sun was just beginning to throw out its golden glow making it perfect for the wander.

We made it all the way to the end, then began the return leg, stopping in at the Carnarvon Hotel for a quick drink and then it was back to the car, a quick duck in for last minute’s bits at the shop and home. I added the photos I had taken and at 6.30pm we wandered over to the camp kitchen, where the hosts were putting on roast beef and gravy rolls with salad. The meal was delicious and even better when there was no cooking or cleaning to be done on your behalf. I think was at least 100 people in enjoying the feed and at $10pp not a bad way to make some extra cash.

We returned to the van for the evening. I was determined to finish all the internet bits, in case the connection is dodgy further on. By 8pm, it was all done and we were both looking for bed. I read for a while before it was lights out.
