Day 132

Alice Springs
Well I slept much better, but the mouse was active, gnawing
away, hopefully at our special red blocks we put out for it. It was really cool
this morning and we had the quilt pulled up to our ears to keep the warm in.
At 8.30am we were up and getting ourselves ready for our
day. We stood outside and enjoyed the morning sun and talked to Bruce and
Denise, discussing our respective plans for the day.
We put our washing through and hung out at the park waiting
for the cycle to finish and then we packed up the car and drove in to town. We
parked up and then made our way to the tourist info centre to pick up brochures
for our ongoing journey. We also asked about the McDonnell ranges before
heading into the shopping district. We picked up some more bits that we needed
and then we dropped our things at the car.

Our next stop was the ANZAC hill memorial. We climbed the
hill to the top, giving us a great view back over the town and along the
ranges. It was a quiet, contemplative space set amongst the plaques
representing the various wars Australians have fought in.
We then took off along the Todd River. There is no water in
the Todd, there is a large riverbed of sand and numerous red river gums, but
that is it. It seems a bit strange wandering the bank and crossing over on the
bridges. I am sure it is a sight when the waters rage.
We then made our way back through the centre of town,
walking down the Todd Mall before returning to the car and heading off to HJ’s
for lunch, something we haven’t had for a few months.
After we had our meal, we made our way out to the old
Telegraph Station to check out the old buildings of the settlement. We didn’t
pay the $13.75 to go in, but chose to wander around the outside and take some
pictures.
After completing the walk, we returned to the car and then
it was back to the van. I booked us in for another night, picked up another
internet key and returned to the van to keep working on catching up the blog.
At 3.30pm we went out to Lasseter’s hotel and casino. We
walked around the casino complex, noting the dinner specials; I think we will
be back tomorrow. We then drove around the golf course. It looked in very good
condition with challenging greens. Paul
just may head out for a game while we are here.
We returned to the van, setting ourselves up outside in the
sun. Bruce and Denise returned from their day out and soon joined us for drinks
and a chat. We were surprised by Vi and Trevor who pulled in and parked up near
us as well. We sat around our van as the light faded and the cool air came in
chatting and enjoying the company.
Eventually we all retreated to our own vans for dinner and quiet
time.
