Katherine – Darwin
It is weird, but I feel like I have ended up in a foreign
land. When we crossed into the tropics, the humidity and the tropical plants
sent me to some Asian paradise. I no longer feel like we are in OZ, it is kind
of surreal, but of course that is part of the beauty of this country and its
ability to seduce you with so many new and differing experiences.
Enough of the philosophical thinking, it is a bit much for
this early morning.
We are on our way to Darwin, we have been driving for about
an hour, the roads are not too busy and so far it has been an easy drive. We
were up at 7.30am, packed up and out of the park just after 8.30am. Last night
I had chosen a park to head to about 10km out of the centre of Darwin, so the
GPS was set and off we went.
Darwin was 3 and half hours away and just over 300km. We
made use of the time with our weights and working on the computer. By 12 we
were passing through some of the suburbs of outer Darwin and then we pulled
into the Discovery Park, found a site suitable and booked in for a week.
We set about settling in to our shady spot, sweating it out
as we did. Paul organised the trailer tyres while I made lunch and then we rang
an air con service group for our air con we have to sweat it out until Monday.
When ready we made our way to Palmerston’s Kmart tyre and
auto and dropped off the two tyres for changing over. We then wandered around
the shopping centre, picking up groceries and new bathers before returning to
the van.
We took it easy, nothing happens quickly in the tropics I
was told. We checked out the park, bought an icecream and wandered back. Paul
then made his way back to the collect the tyres while I bummed around, trying
to get the wifi working. It is a very slow process.
Paul returned with the new tyres and fitted them. We booked
the Hyundai in for its 90 000km service as well for Friday, it will be a big
one and costly. Oh well.
We proceeded to sit around outside enjoying our drinks and
nibbles as the sun began to set its yellow glow.
Paul spoke to a few people at home, catching up on all the
news and then it was off to the pool for a refreshing dip. Thankfully it wasn’t
as cool as the one at Katherine and I was able to hop straight in rather than
prance around the edge for 10min.
We returned to the van and had a very light dinner before
sitting around and then eventually heading to bed.
