Last day in Denmark

 Monday

16 September

Day 78

18 to go

We woke to a cloudy morning, but it didn’t faze us. We spent the morning pottering around the place, before finally getting out for our final day of exploring at 9.45am. We wandered over to the Orstedsparken, so we could wander through the green park and beside the pond. We checked out the various statues that were dotted throughout.

From here, we weaved our way through some familiar streets heading for Nyhavn Wharf. This took us into Kongens Nytorv, a large cobbled square. There is a beautiful garden surrounding a man on a horse and one end houses the Det Kongelige Teater. We checked out the two talking statues, then moved on to the colourful wharf. We found the tourists again.

Nyhavn is a magnet for what seems to be many Asian tourists all vying for the best photographic spot. We enjoyed viewing the wonderfully coloured buildings that line the wharf and the many boats that are moored in front, but we didn’t need to hang around, heading over the river via the foot bridge and then walking 3kms to Reffen food stalls.

On the outer edge was a bakery, so we stoped and had a hot chocolate and a small pastry, before finishing our walk and finally entering the very colourful world of the food market. There was so much choice, from a wide variety of international cuisines. We were bamboozled for choice!

After making our way around all of the stalls, we returned to those that took our fancy and then found a space to enjoy. Being so far out, we were surprised with how many people had ventured out here on a Monday afternoon. It had such a great vibe, I could see this working really well in Fremantle.

We did another walk of the venue, before heading to the ferry, or water bus, stop. We bought a ticket for a $5, that lasted for 75min and then boarded the boat, when it arrived. The ferry was a great option as it took us in a zig zag up the canal and was much cheaper than the packed, open air tourist boats.

We were taken right to the furtherest stop, which was by the international school, that looked like it was made out of stacked sea containers. Fitting, as it was right next to the main port. We then made our way back, stopping at various spots, which gave great views of; a very fancy boat with a helicopter, a replica of the statue of David, a naval museum, the opera house, Nyhavn, the circle bridge and the library, where we alighted, our ticket having expired. Just as well, this is where we needed to be.

We walked some new streets, before passing the Christiansborg palace and heading on the shopping street. Buka, a cafe with amazing pastries was not too busy, when we passed by, so we stopped for a delicious pastry and a hot chocolate. It was well worth it, but the price was a little eye watering, $50.

After picking up some grocery items, we returned to the hotel for 3.15pm, happy to have a couple of hours of peace. I went through the photos of the day, while the news played in the background and Paul had a nap. At 5pm, we got ourselves sorted and made our way day for our last wine hour. We sat in our spot, the cage, as we have nicknamed it and enjoyed our free glasses of wine,

We returned to the room at 6pm, cooking up our microwave meals and just whiling away the next couple of hours. We did begin to watch an Italian movie, with Danish subtitles called, Le Otto Montagne, 8 Mountains. While we couldn’t understand everything, we got the gist of what was occurring and I will try and find it at home to see the ending.

We left the room at 9.30pm, finding it still quite pleasant outside. We walked to the City Hall Square and then up the shopping street to Stork Fountain. There were still some out and about enjoying the clear evening and the almost full moon.

We made it back to the hotel for 10pm, for the first time we were able to enjoy Night Cap hour. I had a kahlua like coffee drink, called Bad Boy and Paul had a whisky. There were a few people in the lobby bar, also enjoying a tipple.

At 10.30pm, we returned to our room, ready to go to bed for the final time in Copenhagen. Tomorrow, we are sailing to Oslo.
