Day 36 - Wednesday 8 August - On to Kununurra

Day 36
Wednesday
8 August

Bungle Bungles Caravan Park  - Kununurra – Lake Argyle

I had a better night’s sleep and woke refreshed ready for the next adventure. We both needed the loo early and figured we were up so may as well get on with it. We had the car hitched on the back by 7.50am and began our journey on to Kununurra.

The day was fine and clear once again, just lovely conditions. We drove by more cows than I care to remember, all out looking for a feed and some sun. We wound our way into the hilly country of the Ormond Range, charred from a recent fire.

At 8.30am we reached the Warmun Community, Paul exclaiming that it was substantially larger than his last visit. I was taken by the paddock housing hundreds of dumped and wrecked cars.

As we continued on the road, we saw plenty of horses out grazing the paddocks as well and I wondered if they were brumbies. The landscape was smoking in one section, an obvious fire being lit to keep the undergrowth at bay and the kites circling for easy pickings.

20km out of Kununurra and we suddenly had iinet phone cover, both our phones pinging away excitedly. I was straight into to see what I had missed, not much. We drove over the diversion dam where there was plenty of water and Paul was picking out the good fishing spots. Shortly after we reached the town site and found a place to park outside the information centre.

We gathered what we needed and then went for a wander, finding the Coles. We did our shopping and returned to the van, putting it all in its spot. We returned to the shopping centre for Paul to put in his script and passed by the jewellers where pink argyles are turned into unique designs. If not for the price, I would be in.

We did a lap of the block, collected the meds and returned to the info centre. We had a chat with the attendant, garnered all the info we needed and a map and then crossed to subway for our lunchtime sandwich. We ate inside the air conned room, glad for the reprieve from the 30 day.

Our next agenda item was the bottle-o for some beers. Once that base was covered, we made our way back to the van and drove on to the fuel station, filled up and then began the final leg of the journey out to Lake Argyle on the Victoria Highway, edging ever closer to the NT border.

In the end, we turned right down Lake Argyle Road, only a few kms short and followed the road a further 20km to the Lake Argyle Resort. There was a bank up of incoming traffic and we were forced into a queue. Paul stayed with the van, while I went in to pay and eventually we were shown to our site.

With the car off, Paul manoeuvred the van and trailer onto site 179 and we made camp for the week. After settling ourselves in, we went for our customary reccy walk checking out the grounds and the facilities. It was a large complex with a beautiful infinity pool that overlooked the Lake and the red cliffs beyond.

Once back at the van, we slipped into the bathers and returned to the pool area keen for a refreshing dip. Refreshing it was and it took me a while to inch into the water, meanwhile Paul has taken a dive. We took the obligatory photos and then enjoyed the view. What a place to call home.

After sitting in the spa, which was no warmer than the poo, we dragged ourselves from the water, towelled off and returned to the warmth of the van. I loaded the photos while preparing dinner and when it was all sorted, we returned to the grass area beside the pool to listen to some live music by Steve Case. He had a short 45min set that we enjoyed, as the sun began to disappear.

We wandered back to the van, ready to enjoy dinner and keen to get down to the beer garden where trivia night was taking place at 6pm. We found a table, grabbed what we needed and then set about trying to win ourselves a prize. We didn’t, but we had fun for an hour. We even got to check in to the free wifi with our phones, but it was so slow, we shouldn’t have bothered.

Once back at the van, I finished off the blog and photos before retreating to bed, keen to read my book before lights out.
