Last day in Devon

Monday

15 July

Day 15

81 to go

I woke still exhausted from yesterday, but wasn’t able to sleep any longer. Paul and I went down for breakfast and at 8am I began ringing chiropractors, to get an appointment for Paul. Thankfully, we were able to get in for later in the afternoon.

Once everyone was up, we sorted out what we would do for the morning. Chell was happy to stay put, while the rest of us made our way to Woolsery to see Dad’s cousin, Anne. We stayed for a cuppa, heard that Great great grandfather was the last miller at Docton Mill, where we had had lunch. We also heard that he would go to Holsworthy on his donkey on Saturday night, drink too much and then his friends would see him back on his donkey, which would then take him home. We left Mum with Anne, while we travelled to Bucks Mill to walk down to the beach and onto the large pebbles to check out the waterfall, that seemed to disappear when it reached the beach.

We walked back up the steep incline, passed Maime’s home. Great grandfather’s second wife who he knew from school but met again in the nursing home in their nineties. Her home would have had an amazing view.

We returned to the car and drove to Clovelly to check out the old church that the family attended and where Grandfer was a bell ringer. It was an interesting little building surrounded by grave stones.

With that bit of family history complete, we returned to Anne’s to collect mum and then we made our way back to the cottage ready for lunch. We were all in need of a rest for now. By 2pm, it was all stations go once again.

We drove into Barnstaple and stopped in to see Ruth, bumping into Paul on his way our her door. We were fortunate to get to see him once more. We stayed at Ruth’s for about 30min, long enough for tea and cake and to give our farewells. Next stop was the chiropractor for Paul. Hopefully he will get some relief from his sore neck.

Our final stop was to see Andrew and the kids in Knowle. We pulled into the very tight little lane, were greeted by 2 enthusiastic dogs and three just as enthusiastic children. Jacob, Frankie and Evie kept us well entertained for the hour and we came out with our ears ringing! We may even catch them in Italy next month.

We returned to the cottage for 630pm, in time for dinner at the Kings Arms pub in town. This would be our final hurrah before we leave tomorrow. Dinner was lovely, but filling and we
