Monday 6 August 2012 – Our last full day in New York Happy Birthday Jaden
& Ben
Day 115 and 45 to go
Paul was awake at 8am and
using the computer while I reluctantly woke. When he went for a shower I
checked my mail and watched TV news. Paul then Skyped the kids while I had a
shower and then I got on to say hello too. We enjoyed seeing and speaking to
them. Is hard to believe we will be back home in 6 weeks. Where has the time
gone?
At 9.45am we left the hotel
and jumped on the F train before swapping to the B. We were heading to
Chinatown to find Dim Sum for breakfast. I had checked the net yesterday and
knew the one we would head to. Jing Fong on Elizabeth Street is a massive
banquet hall that I think would sit up to 500 people.
We were shown to a table that
we shared with another Chinese couple. We were 1 of 2 western couples in the
place so figured it must be good. The food carts were pushed around the hall
and we grabbed the things we liked the look of. They were delicious and I was
full in no time. Paul had some extra bits but I just couldn’t shove them in.
After paying we were back on
the street at 11 and walking through Chinatown and into the Tribeca area (TRIangle Below Canal Street). We
passed many municipal buildings and City Hall and courthouse on our way to
Barnes & Noble, a bookstore much like Borders at home. I picked up the next
50 Shades book while Paul grabbed a few bike mags to keep him entertained and
then we returned to Broadway to walk north towards the Adidas store in Soho (South of Houston St).
It was a fair walk and the
closer we got to Soho the busier the sidewalk became with other pedestrians, in
the end we were playing the space invaders game again dodging people left and
right. Paul was glad to finally get into the store and out of their way for a
while.
Once in I made my way to the
ladies’ sneekers where I tried on a couple of pairs and eventually picked out
some new ones. I was so glad to be throwing away my other crappy ones as they
were doing my feet in. With my new ones on we made our way out of the store and
onto Bleecker Street in search of The Perculiar Pub that sells over 300
different beers. Unfortunately when we got there it was closed so we had to
settle for the GMT pub across the road. Paul was still able to tick off a
couple more beers so it wasn’t a complete loss.
With drinks downed we made
our way up 6th Ave to the subway getting back on an F train and
heading back to 57th St. We walked back to the hotel and our room
where we were happy to have a rest for a bit. It has not been as muggy today
but it is still warms o the aircon was a welcome relief.
At 2.30pm we wandered back to
Times Square to stand in line at TKTS for discount Braodway tickets. At 3.30 we
had made it to the front of the line but unfortunately the shows we wanted to
see did not have suitable tickets so we left disappointed.
We walked back up 7th
Ave, stopping at the Christmas shop for
a decoration and then it was back to the room to organise ourselves for
tomorrow’s flight to Boston.
We watched some more of the
Olympics and then I had a shower and organised to go out for dinner.
We left the room at 8.30 and
wandered down to Times Square passing through the crowds on our way to
Heartland Brewery where we grabbed a bite to eat. The meal was delicious. We
are getting used to US time, eating dinner after 9pm.
When we were done we moved
back through the crowds of Times Square taking in the spectacle of the lights
for the final time. Paul passed our Metrocard onto a guy on the street as we
still had a couple of trips on it. By 9.45am we were back in our room.
We completed the final pack
up and then sat in bed watching some more of the games before finally turning
the light out.
