Thursday 16 August 2012 – A day to wander Milwaukee
Day 126 and 32 to go
It was wonderful to be able
to sleep in this morning and listen to the rolling thunder and the heavy rain.
Though we were concerned it would put a dampner on our day. We eventually got
out just after 9am and had showers, dressed and then went to the restaurant for
eggs benedict. Ummmm.
The rain was starting to
abate as we finished up.
We returned to our room
grabbed all the things we needed and made our way to the Milwaukee trolley stop
where we could catch a bus for $1 to take us around the town. At 11am it
finally arrived and we boarded following the bus route through the city.
We passed many interesting buildings before crossing the river and moving on towards the lakefront where we disembarked at the art museum. The building was designed like a boat and was very impressive. There was also the Discovery Centre and the Lakefront park to wander around. They were busy setting up for Irish Week that begins today.

We admired the size of the
lake again. It really is huge and they obviously treat it like it an inland
sea.
We got back on to the bus
heading into the historic Third Ward district before making our way back to
where we had first got on the bus. This time we continued on to State and third
where we made our way to the Milwaukee River front walk. We started out on the
West side before crossing over to the east and wandering along the edge until we
made it to the bronze Fonz statue where we had to take our photo.
We then crossed over the
river again to have a drink at the Rock Bottom Brewery. We got talking to the
barmaid who gave us a great tip on where to go for dinner. With our new info we
walked back to the hotel.
We then took our washing
across the road to the local Laundromat and hung out there for an hour as it
washed and then dried. It is so nice to have clean clothes to wear again. It
was also interesting just watching the people wander by.
We returned with our washing
and then headed out in the car driving to Lake Front Brewery. As soon as we
parked we could smell that brewery stench. Paul was soaking it in. We made our
way inside. It was so busy. We decided not to do the tour but rather just have
a drink and then make a hasty retreat.
We decided to drive around
the streets for a bit heading down Juneau Ave made famous for Harley Davidson’s
original shed. We passed through the suburbs where the wooden houses are large
but battered.
We eventually made it to the
Harley Davidson corporate office on the corner of Juneau and 37th
Ave, where we parked and had a quick wander around before getting back in to
the car and heading to the hotel.
We didn’t hang around for
long, deciding to head to Benelux Café in Third Ward, the place recommended to
us by the barmaid at Rock Bottom. It didn’t take us too long to get there and
we were able to get a table on the roof. Now that the weather was fine it was
quite pleasant apart from the wind that managed to knock a glass of water all
over Paul’s lap.
The Benelux Café had an
amazing variety of beers on tap and in bottles and Paul was spoilt for choice.
We ordered calamari to share before moving on to delicious mains that were well
priced as well as beautifully presented. The food was so good we decided to
share a dessert as well. Well indulgent.
With full and happy bellies
we went to the market attached to the café where Paul could buy a few more
beers before we wandered back to the hotel.
We sat watching the 6pm news
before chatting to Damon on Skype. It was great to catch up with home. We
continued to watch the TV
