DAY 61
MONDAY
27 February 2017 –
Murray Bridge – Robe
Moving day! We were up and ready to get on the road quickly
this morning. We must be getting the hang of this routine. Everything was
sorted by 9am and we were heading on down the Princes Highway retracing the
road to Meningie.
We passed through the town about 45min later and kept on
heading south. The Coorong National Park bordered our travels for a great
section. We stopped at a rest area to check everything over, have a quick snack
and take a few photos then it was back to it.
By 12 we had reached Kingston S.E., we have no idea what the
S.E. stands for and stopped for fuel, then it was a short 30min drive on to
Robe our final destination and 3 hours later. We pulled in to the Big 4 caravan
park, after a few tight turns, signed in and were given our space. I gave Paul
directions, only to end up in the wrong spot with the van going nowhere.
Urrrr. There was a tight gravel hill
that the van just would not pull up and as we slid back down the trailer went
at all angles which made it a very tight squeeze getting it off the back, but
he managed after a few expletives and looks of frustration. He did eventually
right the situation and we were able to pull into our spot and begin the usual
set up.
We had lunch and then made our way into the town, stopping
in the main street and then going for a walk. The buildings here are well
preserved and many have national trust plaques explaining their historical
significance. We found the Robe Hotel and checked if they had Foxtel, they did.
We continued walking along the path following the edge of the Guichen Bay, a
spectacular turquoise blue, much like Lucky Bay in Esperance.
We reached the marina then turned around, passing the old
Customs House building and back in to town where we stopped a the Caledonian Old
English style pub for cold drink, Paul trying the Cape Jaffa brewery ale on
tap. We chatted to a group from the
Mornington Peninsula and then made our way down the road stopping for and
icecream at a very cool looking place.
Robe is known for seafood, in particular crayfish. We found
the seafood wholesaler to check out the wares only to be disappointed by the
$100 price tags, leaving empty handed. Instead we stopped for a few groceries
and then returned to the van.
I was finally able to get on the net again in the rec room,
so I loaded a few bits before Paul joined me and I watched the local news. We
then returned to the van for dinner.
As the sun began setting we went for a walk along the front,
dropping onto the beach at one stage. The water was just so flat. If I had had
my bathers on I would have contemplated going in. We walked a fair distance,
crossing over a creek entering into the Bay before turning back as the light
began to fade.
Once back at the van we relaxed in the air con before
heading for bed.
