Day 74
Sunday
12 March 2017 –
Cavendish – Rocklands Reservoir
Oh dear, two late nights in a row! Neither of us was in any
hurry to move out of bed and by the sounds of camp nor were the others.
I read in bed until 9am and then slowly got myself sorted
and had breakfast before eventually surfacing. Paul had gone to hang out with
the crowd who were busy in the camp kitchen cooking bacon and eggs. He said the
smell was making him want them too so he returned to the van.
We went for a quick walk along the river before coming back
to the van where I began redoing the days of the blog I lost with the hard
drive taking a dive. The rest of the group took off to Rocklands and Paul felt
guilty just sitting around, so we packed up our lunch and other bits and made
our way to Glendinning, passing an old homestead and then on to Rocklands and
one of the campgrounds which just happened to be where the neighbours were. I
checked out the reservoir and the dead trees protruding from the water, there
were hundreds. There was also a good view back towards the Grampians.
The neighbours headed on while we stayed and had lunch. Paul
was surveying the scene as a possible place to return and camp. There were a
few here, but we figured it would clear out tomorrow at the end of the long
weekend.
We returned to the Getz and back into Cavendish, stopping at
the café for bait and then we walked to the river edge behind the shop. Paul
set himself up while I walked the bank checking out the Historical Cemetry and
reading the stories. A headmaster drowned in the swimming hole in 1855 and
another headmaster lost his four children in the space of a month in 1880, to the
diphtheria epidemic. The headstones were mostly over grown and in need of some TLC,
but it was still interesting to wander about.
I continued down the river to a crossing but before I got over Paul called to say he was bored, so I returned to him and we came back to camp. The neighbours were quietly going about their afternoon, so we sat outside reading and working on the photos and blog. The sun would come out beaming in spurts and when it did it was hot. The day had actually been lovely despite the forecasters saying it would be showery all day.
At 4.50pm Paul made a mad dash to the Bunyip, hearing it was
closing at 5 and he wanted one last beer. He took Tracey with him while I
stayed to finish what I was doing. He returned 15 min later with a carton of beers along with Robbo and Darryl, who had been at the pub for sometime.
We joined the rest of the crowd around
Sue and Wilbur’s annex, chatting and enjoying the fresh evening. The boys went
off to play kick to kick while we busied ourselves with our own version of
Family Feud. When the boys returned dinner was through of and out came all the
BBQ meat. Off the boys went to stand over the fire while the salads and hot
veges were prepared. There was so much meat it didn’t fit on the BBQ plate.
We enjoyed a great feast when it was
all cooked up. It was lovely that we were welcomed to help ourselves to
anything and everything. We have been very fortunate to find ourselves with
these 5 couples (Tracey & Robbo, Robyn & Darryl, Belinda & Les, Sue
& Wilbur, Kerry & Peter and Sue) over this long weekend, it will
certainly be one to remember.
With the dinner done the sweets came
out and by the end we were all complaining of full bellies. The night was
cooler but there was no rain like last night. I was finding places to shove my
hands to keep them warm and eventually resorted to a warm milo. The others
followed suit but it only set us off yawning which we took as a sign to call it
a night.
