Day 108
Saturday
15 April 2017 – Finished “The Girl With All the Gifts”. This
novel was a quite a step from what I normally read, but it kept me hooked until
the last page. Not sure I will check out the movie though, as I am sure it will
be a little too graphic for my liking.
Sale – Bruthen
Paul had had a restless night, having trouble settling as
the guy in the van next to us was still up at 3am playing video games and the
noise from the games was carrying. As usual, it didn’t really bother me as I
would sleep through almost anything.
Paul got up at 8.30am for a shower, encouraging me to get
out also, I did when I had finished the chapter of my book. I sorted the things
in the van, getting breakfast ready before he returned. I then went for my
shower. The cubicles are small plastic moulded places where the curtain creeps
in on you taken most of the available space. I spend most of my time fighting
with the damn thing before getting out and returning for breakfast.
I could hear the radio blaring from our van as I rounded the
corner 100m away, Pauls way of paying back the van guy. I immediately came in
and turned it down, unable to enter the space without my eardrums bleeding.
I at my breakfast and then we decided we would take a walk,
first of to check out the small farmers market set up at the oval and then to
head into town. There wasn’t a lot on offer at the market, so it was a quick
once around and then off through the suburbs and into the main shopping centre,
which today was very busy.
We did a quick shop at Woolies and then at Target before
returning to the van for our mid morning hot cross bun snack. We had decided we
would head out to Bruthen and check out the Bull Ant Brewery there. We packed
the car with everything we needed, I put on something a little more decent than
the daggy trackie and we were off.
Bruthen is a small town about an hour and a half away. It is
on the Great Alpine Highway, a road we will travel over next week as we double
back into SA. TO get to Bruthen you pass through the town of Stratford on the
River Avon, as opposed the English town Stratford Upon Avon. You also make your
way through the larger centre of Bairnsdale before beginning the Alpine Road.
The brewery was easy enough to locate, we parked the car and
then walked in. The place was packed and from the onset we could see it wasn’t
the best day for doing the usual beer reviewer routine. Paul bought a tasting
paddle, the first he has had to fork out for and then we found a spot to sit.
We waited ages to be served and then for the food to come. It was however
plentiful and delicious.
When finished we were keen to get out of the made house.
Paul once again peeved at having to also pay a 12% surcharge for the public
holiday.
We walked the centre of town before finding a loop trail to
wander along that took us along the edge of the river. Paul checked the water
for signs of life, it was flowing well so fish were likely. We made our way
through a corrugated tunnel giving passage under the road above. We stopped to
talk to a local who agreed with Paul’s review of the brewery.
With the loop completed, we returned to the car and I took
the driver’s seat guiding us home once again. The coppers had been out in force
this morning, including an RBT that Paul had to complete, but the afternoon was
quiet.
We emptied the car of our gear and settled in for the
afternoon. I sorted the photos while Paul wrote his honest review and then read
his novel. The temp began dropping with the departing of the sun. We went for a walk around the perimeter of the park while there was still light enough to do so. As we came past the manager's office and fire pit we were caught talking to the manager and her daughter for a while. The camp fire was roaring keeping those sitting around it toasty.
As we were still full from lunch, we decided to forgo having a big dinner, rather settling on soup to warm our insides and fill the small gaps. Instead we enjoyed the ipod on shuffle as the night disappeared again.
