Day 189
Wednesday
5 July 2017 – Began
my new book Kimberley Sun by Di Morrissey
Paronella Park – Tully (Camps 8 #20)
After a good night’s sleep I was awake at 7.30am and up off
for a shower which involved traipsing back to Paronella, about a 500m walk, and
using the caravan park toilet block. Thankfully it was free and I was done and
dusted and back at the van for 8am. Paul was up so we had breakfast, sorted the
van and then walked back to the park for a quiet morning stroll.
It was so lovely getting into the park for 8.30am as there
were no crowds to speak of and I was free to roam and stop for as long as I
wanted and no one was going to wander into my shot. The rain also held off so
it made it easier to take my photos.
When we had completed a lap, we made our way out of the
park, thanking the owner, who just happens to be from Perth and then walking
back to the van and getting on the road at 9.30am, making our way to Tully.
We passed through plenty of can fields as we travelled along
the Old Bruce Highway before heading towards Bruce Highway when we reached the
town of Silkwood. Once on the ne highway it was only a short drive to the town
of Tully.
We found a place to park before doing a walk of the main
street and stopping for some groceries.
We had located a free camp at the showground that required
us to book in at the tourist centre before we could settle in. With that
complete we found a spot to pull up for the night. We had very funny
neighbours, a Scot and his Italian wife. They were full of stories and kept us
amused.
We made our lunch and put on the generator to give the
batteries a boost and by 1pm we were ready to go and explore. We drove toward
the coast, wending our way to South Mission Beach. We found a caravan park on
the beach and enquired about staying a couple of nights. We booked in for the
following two nights and then made our way north through Wongaling Beach and on
to Mission Beach. It all looked so beautiful and it was wonderful to see it on
such a clear day.
We drove on to Clump Point Lookout to admire the view
further. From the top we had a great view of Dunk Island. We spoke to a
Victorian couple, now calling South Mission Beach home. They gave us a few
hints on things to do and we realised we would need longer at the park; something
to sort out tomorrow.
We made our way to Bingil Bay and then back towards Bruce
Hwy, stopping at El Arish and the small country pub for a drink.
Once our whistle was wet, we returned to Tully and drove on
towards Tully Gorge, we didn’t make the gorge itself, but stopped at the
campground that looked lovely.
We made our way down to the Tully River to watch the rushing
water make its way downstream, clambering over the large rocks and small
boulders for the best vantage points. All the while still looking for crocs.
After enjoying the view, we returned to the car and drove
back in to town stopping to pick up meat for tea and then it was back to the
van for the night. I settled in with the photos as Paul read and then we
started on our dinner. With that out of the way it was time to make some calls
home and check on the status of things. We were lucky enough to get a Skype
call in with Mum and Dad and have a ‘Chat’ to Yogi. They were busily complaining about the cold
and technology.
We then did a couple of laps of the showgrounds to put some
numbers on the pedometer before returning to the van ready for bed.
