Day 201

Bowen
We were awake early and after reading for a short while,
were up and getting ready, eager to get to Bowen golf course before the heat of
the morning came to join us.
While Paul sorted himself, I paid for his 9 holes and then
we began. It was a gorgeous morning, the perfect conditions to enjoy a wander
as we chased a little white ball. The course runs parallel to Queens Bay and you
get wonderful views as you walk some of the holes.
The course itself, is only 9 holes, but acts as 18 with
different tees for the front and back nine. It is not an easy course to
navigate, with poor signage, crossing holes and poor maps showing hole
direction.
View from the first hole |
It was quite busy and we spent ant first four holes waiting
at each new tee for the hole to be cleared. Eventually the couple in front of
us, who I am sure were taken a minimum of 15 shots each, waved us through and
from then on we were not held up, making our way around and returning to the
car for 10.30am.
Finishing on the 9th |
We made our way home for mid-morning snacks and a bit of a
rest. I booked us in for a tall ships cruise and snorkel of the Whitsundays for
Wednesday and then organised our lunch packing what we needed into the esky
ready to take it to one of the beaches. The smell of bacon and eggs cooking had
been teasing us for the past two days at the caravan park so we had decided we
would jump on the bandwagon and have it for lunch with salad and a roll.
Wit everything packed, we first drove out to Horseshoe Bay,
but it was so packed that we opted for Rose Bay instead which was far quieter.
We enjoyed our lunch and then kicked off the shoes and
walked along the water’s edge. I was surprised to see the sand glistening so
intently, it looked as if someone had opened a gold glitter shaker and
sprinkled the beachfront.
We returned to the car and parked at the low end of Grays
Bay and walked along the footpath all the way to Horseshoe Bay where I again
kicked off the shoes and paddled around before we turned and wandered back
again.
We made our way back to the van and spent the next couple of
hours relaxing in the air con, before jumping back in the car just after 4pm
and driving to Mullers Lagoon to complete the circuit.
There was plenty of bird life and I enjoyed watching the
Rainbow Bee-Eaters zip about around us before perching in the branches of trees
nearby.
The tourist info book also stated there was a frangipani
grove with 70 different varieties. We found the trees, but unfortunately they
were stripped of their growth due to the winter conditions and we only found a three
that had one or two flowers still clinging on. It was disappointing that the
trees weren’t labelled with what variety they were even though I couldn’t see
them in flower.
Paddock where the movie "Australia" was filmed |
It didn’t take long to complete the walk and we were soon
back at the van and thinking about dinner. After we completed the cook up and
subsequent eating, we made our way out for a walk up the main street. Brad
rang, so I chatted to him for a while, catching up on the goings on at their
end and then we wandered back to the van ready to head to bed.
