Day 191
Friday
7 July 2017 –
South Mission Beach
Well it is nice to know that we can be lazy if we really
want to be! Though being lazy didn’t mean sleeping in today, as I was up and walking
the beach at 6.45am, enjoying the sunrise and watching the clouds drift over
Dunk Island the land further south of us.
Paul joined me out on the sand not long after and we walked
the beach in both directions before returning to the van to read for an hour. Once
well rested, we were up and ready to start the day proper.
After breakfast, I went to the office to book a water taxi
to Dunk Island for tomorrow and was given some other info to see and do. We put
through the washing and did a walk of the beach to pass the time before we
needed to return and hang it out.
We hung around the van for a while, happy to be very lazy
and then we opted to take a drive and check out the Lacey Creek Rainforest
walk. It was about a 10min drive away and once there we followed the 1km
boardwalk circuit through the lush forest, traversing a number of small creeks
and watching the fish feed. Paul was disappointed that once again it was a no
fishing area.
When we had completed the track, we drove back to Wongaling
to pick up groceries, before returning to the van for our lunch. After lunch I
took my cloud recliner and book and settled in across the road at the beach,
enjoying the beautiful sunshine and the idyllic setting. Bliss.
After an hour, getting hot and sweaty, I returned to Paul,
who had stayed in the van and we both donned the bathers and went for a cold
dip in the pool. Luckily it wasn’t over run and we could enjoy our splash
around.
It didn’t take us long to be well cooled off and we decided
it was a good time to take a long walk along the beach. There was a cooling
breeze that made it quite pleasant. I was fascinated with the patterns drawn in
the sand by some unknown ground dwelling creatures. You could be mistaken for
them being deliberately drawn by someone above.
We walked beyond the small creek crossing before eventually
turning around and making our way back to the van just before 5pm. I had been
told by the owner if I wanted to see a cassowary to be at the camp kitchen from
5pm, so we packed up our picnic and books and made ourselves at home with a
view over the grass area and the rainforest.
There were a lot of kids out running around and causing a
raucous, so we both came to the conclusion we had buckleys of catching a
glimpse of the elusive cassowary this evening. We did however enjoy our wine,
dip, cheese and crackers and just after 6pm a giant blow up movie screen was
erected and the movie ‘Sing’ was played for the patrons enjoyment. Having had a
few chardonnays, I was well in the spirit of singing along and laughing in all
the right places. We both really enjoyed the movie, returning to the van at 8pm
having skipped dinner after gorging on the appetisers.
I went for a shower and then was happy to retire, knowing I
would pay somewhat for the bottle of wine I had consumed.
