DAY 39
SUNDAY
5 February 2017 – Cairns 84 v Wildcats 77 – Bugger miss 2nd
spot, stay in 3rd.
Moonta Bay – Moonta – Kadina – Maitland – Port Victoria –
Minlaton - Curramulka (Camps 8 SA#312)
It rained in patches during the night and was still at it
when we woke. It was grey outside, but as has been the way, not particularly
unpleasant. I read for a bit before getting out and organised, doing the last
check with the net before packing everything up.
We made our way in to Moonta, eager to try the famous
Moonta, Cornwall Kitchen, Cornish pasty, but to my horror the place was shut,
despite the net saying it would be open. Noooo!
We walked a lap of the streets feeling dejected and being rained on,
taking photos of various sites, then it was back to the car and returning to
Kadina for fuel.
With the gps set we continued on the Maitland and as it
turns out, straight through it. Not much seem to be happening here on this lazy
Sunday morning so we changed the course to Port Victoria and continued on our
way.
The roads between Kadina and Port Victoria were pretty poor,
with lots of spots sending us and the vehicles bouncing and by the time we made
it to Port Victoria Paul had some work to do refitting the wheel straps to the
car.
We took the opportunity to have a wander around the town and
down to the waterfront where there was a jetty and a maritime museum to check
out. There was also plenty of signage around telling you about the various
shipwrecks between the coast and Wardang Island.
Once we were back a the car, we drove to the RV rest stop at
the sports oval and had lunch, before deciding we would move on. We checked the
Camps 8 book and Geowiki, making the decision to checkout Minlaton, but to stay
in Curramulka.
We drove out to Curramulka first up, to check out the set up
at the sports grounds. It all looked good, we then drove on to Minlaton, a
larger town, to see what it had to offer. There wasn’t a lot there really and
being Sunday much of it was closed. We went into the pub hoping they would have
Fox, yeah right. We wandered the main street, picked up info at the tourist
centre and then checked out the Red Baron plane and the Harry Butler statue,
reading all about his story.
As we wandered back, we remembered being Sunday the Wildcats
game was likely to be played on SBS, so we went back to the pub, ordered a
drink and asked for it to be put on. To our dismay they couldn’t get a signal
so we were stuck with 7, grr!
With nothing else to do, we made our way to Curramulka parked
the van and opted to try out the local pub here. Success. With SBS on we were
able to watch the Cats take on Cairns, have a few drinks and chat with the
barman. Unfortunately, the cats weren’t as successful, going down by 7pts.
