DAY 55
TUESDAY
21 February 2017 –
Sellicks Beach – Victor Harbour – Goolwa – Port Willunga
A later than usual night meant a late start this morning,
not what we really wanted as we were heading down the Fleurieu Peninsula to
check out a few of the towns. It didn’t
help that the car wouldn’t start either. After trying to jumpstart it to no
avail, Paul soon worked out that he had to have his foot on the clutch for it
to kick over. Glad we didn’t call a mechanic for that one.
Our first stop was Sellicks Beach. We stopped at a parking
area and went for a walk. The weather was just glorious today and the water
reflected it too. This beach is one you can drive on with your regular car,
though we didn’t, we just watched others do so and walked along the firm,
white, squeaky sand enjoying the sun on our face for a change.
We then headed on to the Nan Hai Pu Tuo Temple and Buddha on
Sellicks Hill overlooking the beach. A large female Buddha statue stands
proudly overlooking the gulf below. Unfortunately there were building works
going on so I had to take photos through the fencing, but I managed.
Our next destination was about 40min down the road, Victor
Harbour. We made our way to the esplanade, parked and grabbed our lunch things,
sitting on a park bench overlooking the waters of Encounter Bay while we ate.
Ahhh..
Once full, we walked to the bridge that takes you across to
Granite Island. They have a tram service, a cart pulled by a Clydesdale, that
you can take for $7 or you can walk. We opted to walk, happy to watch the tram
being pulled by the beautiful horse as it passed as on the bridge.
We ten began the walking trail loop around the island taking
in the views of the landscape, Encounter Bay and the Southern Ocean. It was a
lovely day for a walk, but the sun had a bit of bite to it. The walk around the island was fairly easy
and we had made it back to the mainland about an hour later.
We took a walk up the main shopping streets before returning
to the car and following the coast through Port Elliot and on to Goolwa where
we stopped to check out the old buildings and the historic wharf. We looked for
the Steam Engine Brewery that was advertised, only to find it had closed and
become a distillery.
Satisfied we had seen all, we returned to the car and wound
our way back to the park via Mount Compass. We stopped briefly at Coles and
then once home, sorted dinner while having a rest.
Following dinner we drove out to Aldinga Beach to take some
photos. The water was like glass, there wasn’t a ripple to be seen on the
surface. It looked so inviting. We then moved on to Port Willunga to take
photos of what remains of an old jetty. The sunset was wonderful and other
photographers were taking advantage of the perfect conditions.
Once the sun dropped and the light faded it was time to head
back to the van before the bugs took a hold. We sat up for a bit before finally
succumbing.
