Day 310 –
Saturday
4 November –
Merimbula – Pambula – Merimbula
We were awake at 6.45am this morning even though we stayed
up til 10.30pm last night keeping track of the Wildcats game. I got out to go
to the loo at 7am and was enveloped by a beautiful blue morning, so once I was
back I urged Paul to get out too so we could go for a walk.
We wandered out to the point to look for whales, but didn’t
see any, so continued our walk down to the beach and out on to the sand of
Short Point Beach. The sand was freezing and our feet were feeling it as we
wandered along the shoreline.
We didn’t go too far before turning around and making our
way back up the hill and to the van ready to start the day proper. Breakfast
and shower sorted, Paul piled the golf clubs into the car and we drove to Tura
Beach Country Club. The course is quite hilly with great views of the water
from the car park. Unfortunately the course was booked up due to a comp, so we
had to return to the car and head to Pambula Beach Country Club instead.
Thankfully this one was a bit easier to get into.
We were allocated the back 9 and began our round at 9.30am.
While there were others on the course, we had no one playing in front of us
that made for a quick and easy round. As we completed the 9 holes we noted how
similar it was to Marangaroo with the number of kangaroos in residence and they
were rarely perturbed by our presence.
Paul played ok and we were all done by 10.45am. The green
fees came with a free drink in the bar, so we had that before heading on. We
didn’t drive too far, stopping at Pambula Beach for a quick look and then
parking up on the southern bank of Merimbula Lake where we could walk along
side the sapphire waters and watch the bird life and SUP riders. After
yesterdays rain it was a welcome relief to have such glorious weather.
After our time in the sun, we returned to the van, unloaded
and had an early lunch. I went through the photos for the morning while I ate
and Paul read his book.
By 1pm I was looking to head out once again, so we drove to
the rotary park to follow the scenic walk through the bush to Bar Beach. We
watched the tide rushing away, taking the lake water out to sea through a small
channel at Bar Beach.
We then continued up the hill to a couple of lookouts taking
in Merimbula Lake and Merimbula Beach. From the lookouts, it was a short walk
to the wharf. We stood out on the jetty watching some teens talk about jumping
from the jetty, but no one was game.
We wandered up past the wharf building, bumping into Nigel’s
Richmond Tigers friend who happens to run the wharf restaurant and aquarium. We
had a chat before he told us to go and check out the aquarium below.
We made our way past the various tanks checking out the
different species of fish, most of which are found in the waters off Merimbula.
It was very interesting, but I am glad I didn’t have to pay the $22 entry.
We returned to the restaurant, said our goodbyes and made
our way back to the car via the walking trail, all in all a lovely way to spend
the sunny afternoon.
When back at the van, I added the photos I had taken earlier
as well as sorted the blog, knowing we would be heading out to Nigel’s later
and I wouldn’t have a chance then.
By 5pm we were organised and ready to head out. We stopped
in town first to grab a few bits and then it was on to Nigel’s home in Tura
Beach, 5 min out of town. We entered Kangaroo run before arriving at Wallaby
Way. Turns out both streets are aptly named, as we almost took out a roo
opposite Nigel’s, with it bouncing out unnoticed, as we were checking house
numbers.
Feeling a little rattled, we entered Nigel’s home through
his garage which doesn’t house his car but his man cave with a wall of beer
bottles, all consumed by him over the years
We moved through the home to the back yard where we sat out
on the patio, chatting to Nigel and his mate Matt. Of course most of the
discourse was beer related, but we also chatted sport and about our
holiday. Nigel’s daughter arrived home
from work and came out to say hi and to show off her very cute 6 week old
bunny, Arlo. Of course I couldn’t resist a cuddle and got busy telling Paul I
want to get one when we get home.
Different beers flowed through the afternoon and as the
night cooled and the BBQ had done its thing, we retreated to the man cave and
then the dining room to indulge in a delicious dinner.
Once back in the man cave, it was time for the boys to drink
more beer while we all played Kelly Pool, listening to the music loud. I
couldn’t believe how fast the different beers were coming out and being shared
around and it didn’t take long for the evening to get messy.
In the end I sat and played Frogger with Nigel and then
Paul, as they went through old records to play. It was an entertaining evening,
but it was quickly getting late and I soon had to call time. I could see it
would be a struggle tomorrow.
At 12.40am, we said our goodbyes and thankyous and I finally
coaxed Paul into the car and drove us home. It was a slow and careful drive due
to the number of roos grazing by the streets. Thankfully none chose to jump out
in front of us.
I drove into the very quiet caravan park and we attempted to
get into the van as stealthily as we could so as not to wake the neighbours and
then we were quick to jump into bed, a late one at 1am.
