Day 311 –
Sunday
5 November –
Merimbula – Mallacoota
Oh late nights, how you bite in the morning! If we weren’t
moving on this morning, we would have gladly stayed asleep in bed until midday,
but it wasn’t to be. We didn’t have any alarms set, so I think my brain was
busy most of the night to ensure we didn’t oversleep, as it was we were awake
at 8.30am. We didn’t really have time to process it, we just had to get up and
on with it. It was funny that I hadn’t had anything to drink yet I still woke
feeling like I had a hangover.
Anyway, we muddled through our pack up routine, along with
the usual morning stuff
Anyway, we muddled through our pack up routine, along with
the usual morning stuff and by 9.45am we were ready to head on to our next
location, relieved to see that Mallacoota was only 112km’s away, a drive of an
hour and a half.
We travelled back through the main streets of Merimbula and
Pambula and shortly after we were back in Eden. The Whale festival would have
started its third day of events, but we didn’t bother to stop in and continued
along the A1 past the Boydtown turn off and then we were venturing over new
ground.
Much of the drive was through state forest, some of it being
heritage listed. The drive was yet again windy and dotted with hills and dales.
Large trees lined the path for the majority of the way.
At 10.45am we were greeted by the border crossing signs,
finally arriving back in Victoria, 6 months after leaving, so hard to believe.
Shortly after we took a left, heading east away from the A1 and back towards
the coast. By 11.20am, we had finally arrived in the small holiday town of
Mallacoota.
I had located a foreshore park to stop in at, run by the
shire council. We found a spot to park the van and booked in for a couple of
nights. We were surprised to be told that it was a long weekend and prices
would be $43.50 a night grr. The fact is the public holiday is actually Tuesday
for Melbourne Cup, so it technically isn’t a long weekend, but hey what can you
do.
We drove the van through the massive complex, finding our
sight up on a grassy hill. We took the car off first noting it had moved
significantly while travelling on the trailer. This seems to be happening of
late and we are not sure why. Once the car was of, we could back the van into
position and finally set our selves up.
I made lunch and we ate and took stock, glad to be settled
and both feeling a little weary.
After catching our breath, we went for a wander checking out
the views and the park. We did a full lap that meant travelling back into town
and down the main street. A Chinese restaurant caught out eye with a yum cha
sign and we figured we would be back tomorrow.
We then walked down to the waters edge where we could check
on the luck of the fishermen as well as take in the sights of Bottom Lake and
the Islands that are dotted within the lake. There were plenty of boat moorings
along the lake wall and it was obvious that this holiday spot is popular for
those with a watercraft.
We followed the wall around, stopped at the point lookout to
take in the view and then returned to the van, spent and ready for a lay down.
We both read our books, but it wasn’t long before we put them aside and took
time for a nap.
We dozed quite happily until about 430pm, then got up,
continuing to read in our “lounge”.
At 5.15pm I started making dinner and after eating and
cleaning up, we made the most of the evening light by getting out for a walk.
We wandered along the lake edge looking for signs of life in the water, but
mostly finding birds above.
We continued to the main jetty and around, following the
path. We could see fishermen on the opposite bank at a number of fishing platforms,
so we decided to continue following the footpath until we reached them.
It was a lovely walk and a beautiful evening. Once we had
reached the platforms and been told not much was happening, we turned around
and made our way back to the park and ultimately our van. We were happy to have
clocked up enough steps.
Once in, we didn’t waste anytime getting to bed, it was only
8pm, but we were still tired from our escapades last night. We read for a
further hour and then happily turned out the lights.
