Day 225
Thursday
10 August 2017 –
Eumundi – Moffat Beach – Maroochydore – Mooloolaba –
Alexandra Headland
We were awake by 6.45am and happy to read for an hour before
contemplating having to get up. Paul went off for his shower while I made the
bed and breakfast all while loading photos to the blog and Facebook. I can see
my internet use being far greater this month.
Just after 9.30am we were ready to make our way to the
southern beaches of the Sunshine Coast starting with Moffat Beach not far from
Caloundra. It took about 45min to arrive there as we followed the motorway
towards Landsborough. Signs for Australia Zoo, Steve Irwin’s park, showed we
were not far from the establishment though we haven’t decided if we will
venture on out there.
We darted east from there, finally making it to the coast
and finding a parking spot right on the beach. It was another glorious day and
there were plenty of surfers taking full advantage of it. It was cool to see
many of them out of long boards and riding in long, rolling waves that pushed
them along like a parent with a pram, rather than trying to dump the living
bejesus out of you.
We watched, mesmerised for a while, before following the
beachside path along the Tooway Creek, through suburbia and back to more beach.
We gladly recharged the negative ions, as we followed the path back to the car.
Our main reason for dropping in here was, surprise surprise,
to check out Moffat Beach Brewing Co. This was a café, but had now become a
brewery as well. We spoke to the owner for a bit, before pulling up a seat at
the bench over looking the water while Paul tried the beers and I enjoyed a hot
chocolate. What a way to spend the morning.
After finishing up and thanking Matt for his hospitality, we
drove on to Maroochydore. We parked on the beachside street and wandered along
finding a bench where we could watch the water and have lunch. You could pay a million dollars for the views
but today we had them for free.
With our bellies full, we wandered the seaside strip before
stopping in at Black Bunny Kitchen. Matt had suggested the place for it
extensive beer list and it didn’t disappoint. Paul ordered a beer, while I
stuck to the water.
We continued our walk, passing our car and following the
path to Maroochydore Beach. There were plenty of people taking full advantage
of the sun and some hoping to catch a rare wave.
Once back at the car, we drove to Mooloolaba a 5 min drive
down the strip. Like Maroochydore, the high-rise apartments and resorts
dominate the skyline as do the restaurants at street level. This certainly is a
heavily tourist driven part of the Sunshine Coast.
As we did in Maroochydore, we walked the beachfront, finding
a statue of Steve Irwin and his kids. We then crossed behind the main road to
check out the canals, the massive homes and the just as impressive large boats.
There is some serious money here. Pelicans lined the sand in front of a fish
cleaning station just waiting for the scraps to be thrown their way.
We made it back to the car for 3pm, in time for the next
brewery to be open. We made our way to Alexandra Headland and the 10 Toes
Brewery only to find it not open. We went for a walk and returned, but it still
wasn’t open, however there were others waiting in anticipation and at 3.30pm we
were finally let in.
Paul had the usual tasting paddle and I took photos, all
while chatting to a local restaurant owner keen to get the 10 toes beer on tap
at his Pilipino restaurant, He was from England originally but has been in OZ
for 45years. He was a great source of amusement.
We talked to Rupert the owner and another fat, arrogant
restaurant owner who couldn’t help but sprout how much expensive alcohol he had
bought and drunk. He told us he owned Char restaurant in Mooloolaba and I made
a point of remembering so that I could make sure no one I knew would go there.
Time was beginning to slip away and I was ready for dinner,
so we made a move, joined the evening commuter rush and headed back to Eumundi,
glad to finally get in and eat.
We spent the evening with our usual homework, before
retiring to bed to read our prospective books and then lights out.
