Day 229

Eumundi –Kilcoy –Esk - Toowoomba
On the road again and this time heading away from the coast
and into the hills. We both endured a restless night, the blankets coming on
and off more often than a nun’s nightie. When the light of the sun was beaming
into the van, I woke, walked to the loo noticing the heavy fog engulfing the
low lying areas around us, I then returned to bed reading until Paul was ready
to get out. We set ourselves into moving mode and made good time getting
everything ready for the journey ahead.
We had an audience of young hippies watching us load the car
and questioning us about the set up with the motorbike. After answering the
questions, we were ready to make tracks.
We had a 280km journey ahead of us.
We followed the Bruce Highway to the Beerwah exit and then
followed on towards the town of Kilcoy. The roads on this stretch left a lot to
be desired with many patched potholes and a few in dire need of repair.
We passed through the little town of Kilroy an hour into the
journey and continued to follow the GPS through the town of Esk. This looked
like quite a pretty little spot and one I would have happily spent time
checking out if we weren’t already set on out destination.
By 11.30am, we were only 15km from Toowoomba, but we had a
bit of a climb to make it to the town centre. We watched the line of traffic
inching its way up the 10° slope. There were so many trucks heading up the hill
at a snails pace. We ducked an weaved from the left lane to the right, eager to
not be held up by the slow moving vehicles and forcing us to join the slow
procession. Fortunately we made the climb with little interference.
I had located the Toowoomba Motor Village in the caravan
book and we navigated there, booked in for two nights and then proceeded to set
up. It was a bit tight squeezing the van and trailer on to our patch but Paul
managed in the end.
I made lunch as Paul went to put the washing on. We were
both in dire need of clean clothes being down to the last of the underwear and
socks. We ate and then had a look around the park, acquainting ourselves with
the amenities. We chatted to the owners for a bit before returning to the van.
We needed a few groceries, so we walked down the main street
to the nearby Coles and picked up what we needed before returning, hanging the
washing and taking off in the car to explore the town.
Our first stop was the information centre for a heads up on
things to see and do in the area
They had a sunflower head cut out that I
couldn’t resist sticking my head out of for a photo.
We then drove into the city centre, parked at the large
shopping centre and proceeded to walk the block, checking out the old buildings
and the art that adorned various buildings and parks. We did a stop in Rivers
again for Paul to pick up a few more bits and then we returned to the car.
We had discovered a craft beer pub in our search for the local breweries, so we made our way there. Paul wasn’t disappointed with the selection at the Spotted Cow and David was only too happy to give him samples to try before deciding on his beer of choice. In the end we stayed for 3 schooners and picked up some information regarding further places to visit. I think we will be back tomorrow.
We returned to the van just after 5pm. I was starving so got
straight into dinner and we were eating shortly after.
Paul rang Adrian at Four Brothers Brewing to organise a meet
up tomorrow and then we went for a walk, taking in the sports ground opposite
the caravan park. Lots of young netballers and soccer players were out in force
training, while their parents stood around waiting.
Once back at the van, I went through the photos and blog,
while Paul rang Jaden to see how things were going at home. He was pleased to
let us know his single may be picked up by Triple J unearthed so that is great
news.
Feeling exhausted, it was an early trip to bed, hoping to
catch up on the z’s missed last night.
