Day 341 - Tuesday 5 December - Adelaide Zoo

Day 341
Tuesday 5 December – Completed the novel “Music and Freedom” by Zoe Morrison. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel by the Melbourne writer. She successfully intertwined life in Oxford with life in Mildura and created a strong female lead character who endured so much at the hands of her husband and had to deal with the cards she was dealt.

Moana – Adelaide

A sunny day dawned calling us to get out and enjoy it. We stayed in bed until 820am but then got cracking with breakfast and showers. We packed our day bag, with lunch and other necessities before climbing in the car and driving to Seaford shops, parking and heading for the 1005am train. We arrived in Adelaide at 1050pm, made our way to to the road and then used google maps to work out how to get to the zoo.
We followed the road toward the Torrens and then walked away from the oval and next to the green parks that bordered the river. There were interesting sculptures and bridges to check out as we wandered for 15min.
We located the zoo entrance, paid the $35 ticket price, took our map and began our wander of the exhibits. I was keen to get to the zoo as they House the giant panda pair, Wang Wang and Fu Ni. We passed the Pygmy hippo and otters before entering the bamboo Forrest and finding the two pandas behind the glass. Wang Wang was sitting at the glass like Norm from the old Life Be I n It ads, he just needed a tinnie and the tv remote. He was busy stripping bamboo and chowing down on his breakfast. They were just so cute, I wanted to bring them home with me.
We continued along the path, passing a lone flamingo and then onto an above ground platform to watch the gibbons. They were like Olympic gymnasts, flying around from branch to branch. We sat there for ages mesmerised by their antics.
We rounded past many enclosures where the animals appeared to be missing in action. Paul stated that so much had been spent on various enclosures they had no money for animals. We did however see the lions, meerkats and giraffe before walking through the nocturnal house.
The tamarinds has a great caged run that went quite a distance and traversed out over the paths. One cheeky one was lying in the rectangular, wire tube poking his tongue out at us.
We found some park benches to sit at and have lunch before consulting the map and deciding on what was still to be seen.
We wandered through the lizard and snake enclosure, past the hippo and back into the bird enclosures where we could walk through the cages and get up and close to lyre birds, jabiru and cockatoos.
We took in the far end of the park where the sea lions, meerkats, a South American Wolf that looked like a fox on steroids and the orang-utan were all housed. The baboons were out preening each other and Mum was hiding her new baby.
We did a final walk through the panda enclosure. They were getting ready to let them out into their rock and bamboo outdoor pen, but we didn’t hang around to see it. Instead, we found the exit and made our way into the CBD where we were bombarded by people. Rundle Mall was frenetic and we had a job trying to weave our way through.
We made our way back to Lady Burra Brewhouse where I could access the wifi again and of course Paul was happy to stop for a beer. Today’s access was far quicker with fewer people in the bar, this cut down the upload time of the photos for the beer reviews.
By 3pm, I was happy to finish up and we made our way to the train station once again, getting on the train and settling in for the journey home. We arrived just before 4pm, walked to the car and made our way home. I prepared dinner and then sat down to check out the photos of the day.
At 6pm we cooked tea and ate and then it was off for our nightly walk of the suburbs. We began with the usual beachside path, turning into the suburbia and down a number of streets we had yet to check out. Some of the old Beach shacks have made way for monstrous, modern mansions of which some are beautiful, while others are just disgusting.
We returned to the van with 20 000 steps under our belt and happy to laze. I watched an episode and a bit of A Place to Call Home, before wanted to head to bed and read. I did the same as we listened to the high school kids from Queensland playing basketball on the court until it was dark.
