Day 351 - Friday 15 December - A day to relax around Esperance

Day 351
Friday 15 December

Esperance

Paul was awake at 530am, his body clock still on SA time. I tried to ignore the fact he was awake and continue dozing for a while, but it didn’t last and by 615am, I too were reading. We stayed in bed until 7am, before crawling out, showering and eating breakfast. It was a beautiful blue sky day and far too good to be spent indoors.
We decided to head to Esperance golf course, arriving at 8am and heading straight out on the picturesque, yet challenging course. We had one group of 5 ahead of us on the first, but they waved us through and we were able to continue relatively unhindered for the rest of the round. The only issue we had with groundskeepers checking sprinklers. They had a kelpie with them, who was happy to chase the quad bike and take a dip in the many water hazards. What a life!
Paul found his share of the water too, having to remove his shoes and go wading on one occasion. The other times, he was able to retrieve his ball with a stretch of the club. Just as well the water was fairly shallow and his ball landed near the bank.
When Paul paid the green fees the board said $20 for 9 – 12 holes. We found out why it was so flexible as we wandered down the 9th, it doesn’t finish back at the clubhouse. You have to play through the 12th to reach home. Just as well we were happy for the walk and not in any hurry.
Before we finished the 11th hole, we were swooped by lapwings, Birds we are used to seeing combing beaches. I didn’t realise at first that was what was going on, until they continued to dart across at us making a clacking noise. We finished the 12th unscathed and ready to return to the van, still early at only 10am.
Once in, we wandered down to the office area to use the wifi. I was finally able to reset my watch, as well as add to the blog and Facebook photos. It was quite warm, but there was also a pleasant sea breeze wafting through.
After completing everything I needed to do and Paul checked his email, we dropped things back at the van and walked into town. We checked in with a couple of pubs to see if they were any classier and showing Fox, the Pier hotel seemed like a decent spot to return to for the basketball. With that established, we returned to the French bakery for a pie and sausage roll for lunch and then walked home as we ate.
We were still hungry when we got in, so peanut butter rolls were created and I enjoyed mine while watching another episode of A Place To Call Home. By 130pm however, Paul was ready to head out to Lucky Bay Brewery for their 2pm opening.
We had visited this brewery when we were here in January, but Paul wasn’t writing for the We Love Craft Beer website then, so he was wanting to get back and review them. We met Robyn, who gave us the spiel and then we were given the beers to try. We sat outside enjoying the lovely afternoon. Paul then had his squealers filled.
We were intending on heading to town to watch the NZ v Adelaide match, but our time at the brewery was lengthy, as Nigel the other owner turned up later and wanted to chat. In the end I had to be content to grab a score on my phone when internet coverage was working. It was a bit hit and miss out there.
We finished up at 4pm and returned to the van, just as the 36ers beat the Breakers, an unexpected win. We unloaded the beers and settled in for the evening. I watched a couple for a DVD episodes, Paul began his homework and chatted to Gwen from School.
I eventually started dinner, we ate and then we went back to the office for a little more Internet time. We didn’t stay long, returning by 830pm and it was straight to bed. I stayed up to write the blog and read while Paul was content to sleep. I am hoping my body clock will start to align itself with the new Timezone, but only if Paul isn’t up ridiculously early again tomorrow.
